Seriously, does anyone read this blog? I don’t advertise it, so mostly I see spammers trying to join and whatnot. Happy to continue posting updates if people are interested, but it’s pepper prep-season so I’m focusing on those.
Check this guy out! Looking pretty good. It didn’t react much to the bloom nutes which isn’t all that surprising. I was hoping to try to encourage it into fruiting at it’s young life. I’ve added more bloom nutes to see what happens.
I’ve had a few avocado trees that have managed to drop all of their leaves. I’m not sure if it was the temperature in the room it’s in, the lack of humidity, a bad nutrient solution, drowned air-roots, or even bugs. Once the leaves get crispy like in this photo, they’re done. The plant itself can come back though.
This one pictured above, I removed all the leaves. Will update in a few weeks with progress, if any.
This growth kinda took me by surprise. I stopped checking on it a while and out of nowhere it had a nice shoot and even leaves coming off of it. Even cooler is that it did so with just half a seed! Clearly the nutrients helped.
This is a fortunate update after the mishap of the previous. The seed rebounded! Half of the seed itself shriveled up. I removed that half and put it back into the nutrients. Nice to see it wasn’t a goner!
I need to preface this by saying 2 months isn’t really indicative of how much yours could be growing in this time. The seed provides some nutrients, but hydroponic nutrients in addition would have had this guy’s tail a lot longer had I started it earlier. That said, this was an overdo rehoming.
I was preparing this little guy for it’s new home in a creamer container…
I got it dialed in with the container full enough that the little tail would be dipping into the solution.
For some reason thought it would be a good idea to leave it resting on top while I wrapped the container in foil. Bad idea. The seed fell off the top of the container and hit the counter, splitting in half…
Arggggh! It sure sucks when you’ve been babying something this long and then you potentially cause irreversible damage to it. Rather than give up, I grabbed a toothpick, broke a half inch or so off, and shoved it into one side of the seed, then sandwiched the other half into it.
Looks like we have two experiments in one… wish me luck!
As mentioned previously, I was considering wrapping this seedling in parafilm grafting tape. This is the first time I’ve used it, so hopefully it works out. Here’s a few photos of the before and after wrap-job.
Based on the little research I’ve done, it may take a few months to get the trunks to fuse together if successful. Also, I will be changing the nutrient solution for something stronger, since the leaves are looking pretty light when they should be much darker and shiny.
Pretty soon we will see a tail coming off of this guy, and then we can add it to some hydroponic nutrients. These pictures show the bottom of the seed which has started to open up.
